Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What ages of students do you work with?

A: Most of our students are in grades 9 through 12, with a smaller number in 6th, 7th, and 8th grades.

Q: What subjects do you offer?

A: We offer tutoring through the AP level in most major academic areas, including mathematics, biology, chemistry, physics, English, writing skills, history, and foreign languages. We also offer support in study skills and organization.
Q: Will you tutor my child in my home?

A: Yes. Depending on where you live in the Los Angeles area and the subjects needed, we are generally able to provide in-home tutoring.
Q: How many sessions do you recommend for SAT preparation?

A: We do not recommend a set number of sessions because every student is different. How long SAT preparation takes depends on score goals, starting level, time available for homework, level of student focus, interest and commitment, learning differences, test anxiety, and many other factors. The tutoring schedule is tailored to each student. Some students need very few hours, and some need a little extra time.
Q: Do you offer group SAT preparation classes?

A: No. All of our SAT preparation is one-on-one so the curriculum can be tailored to your student’s needs, and each student can progress at his own pace.
Q: Do you offer group SAT practice sessions?

A: Yes. We offer three mock SAT sessions before each actual SAT administration date. They take place in our office and closely resemble the testing conditions of the actual SAT.
Q: What is the benefit of group SAT practice sessions?

A: This is a great opportunity for students to road test the strategies they learn in tutoring sessions, and then fine tune them with their tutors before they take the actual SAT. It also gives students a chance to experiment with managing their time and energy over the four hours of the test, and helps them learn how much sleep they will need the night before, and what they should eat for breakfast and on the breaks to maintain energy and focus.
Q: When does tutoring occur? Can the tutor come on the weekend?

A: Tutoring is provided when the student is available. Tutoring is available evenings, weekends, or whenever the student needs it.
Q: How quickly can I begin tutoring?

A: It generally takes a few days to get tutoring set up. After the student and parent(s) complete the initial consultation with Stephanie, the most appropriate tutor will be selected for the student. Stephanie and the tutor will have a detailed conversation about the student’s needs, they will co-design the curriculum for the student, and then tutoring can begin.
Q: How is tutoring scheduled?

A: After the initial consultation and matching the student with a tutor, the tutor will call the family to schedule the first appointment. At that point the tutor will provide his or her contact information, and all future scheduling will take place between the family and the tutor.
Q: Can you help my child decide which classes to take next year?

A: Yes. During the initial consultation current and future coursework will be discussed and planned.
Q: Can you help us figure out which standardized tests to take and when to take them?

A: Yes. This is discussed and planned during the initial consultation.
